John Reiter began his love of photography some forty five years ago. As an international, award winning nature and wildlife photographer, he travels to various locations around the world. In addition, he offers portrait, catalog and event photography as well as local, one-on-one "personal training" in digital photography. John attended the Lepp Institute of Digital Imaging and completed training by Nikon, Epson, Adobe, NAPP and others. He considers himself fortunate to have photographed with, and been mentored by, some of today's finest pro photographers including Darrell Gulin, Adam Jones, Rick Sammon, Daniel Cox, Joe & MaryAnn McDonald and many others.

John's work has won numerous awards including two time winner of the Nature's Best Windland Smith Rice Award. Six of his images were recently named as semi-finalists in the Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition sponsored by the London Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine. In addition, John's images have appeared in a number of national magazines and are currently on display in many private collections. John's work has also been featured in various galleries including a major, six month exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC and at the Etat Sauvage Exposition in Montreal.

NEW IMAGES

Two new galleries featuring Georgia and Oregon have been recently added to my portfolio ... spring in Georgia was a bit like making lemonade out of a lemon ... three days of hard frost early in the season killed off many of the buds on the flowering plants. However, Atlanta's other attractions provided some excellent photo opportunities and Savannah did not disappoint with it's historical charm and magical oak trees covered in Spanish moss.  Oregon was amazing with my focus being on the Columbia River Gorge area. Known for it stunning waterfalls, this national recreation site also has lush forests and an abundant display of colorful wildflowers.  One of my favorite images was taken from the Tom McCall Preserve overlooking a field of balsam root and lupine flowers while snow covered Mt. Hood (an extinct volcano) stood proudly in the background.

A VIDEO WAS RELEASED IN 2009 FEATURING THE WINNING PHOTOGRAPHS OF THAT YEAR'S NATURE'S BEST INTERNATIONAL PHOTO COMPETITION

One of my images, a Mountain Gorilla in Rwanda, was selected as the grand prize winner.  In addition, another one of my images , a Lion kill in Kenya, was chosen as the first place winner in the wildlife category,

To my knowledge, this is the only time in the history of the competition that someone has won both categories in the same year.

VIDEO RELEASED ANNOUNCING NEW SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT

(this exhibit has ended... however, the video link below will give you a glimpse of this celebration of 20 years of the best in nature and wildlife photography)

I'm pleased to inform you that the Smithsonian Museum and Nature's Best Magazine have recently announced the opening of their newest exhibit entitled., "20 years of Nature's Best Photography".

Open through August 2016, this 5,000 square foot exhibit features large format images of international winners from each of the past twenty years. The grand prize  and category winners were selected from over 500,000 submissions to be honored with the prestigious Windland Smith Rice Award for outstanding nature and wildlife photography.  The exhibit is free to the public and is located on the second floor of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC.  I'm fortunate and proud to have my grand prize winning image on display.

If you are in the DC area over this next year, you might want to take advantage of this wonderful exhibit.  In the meantime, Epson and Nature's Best Photography have put together an excellent video on the exhibit (you'll see my image when the video gets to 2009).  An easy link to the video is ....
